AI and Your Career: What Australian Midlife Workers Are Experiencing, and What Helps

This article explores what is happening in the Australian workforce as AI emerges, what the psychology research tells us about how people are responding, and what helps when the changes feel personal.

What the Australian data reveals

The picture in Australia is nuanced, revealing both optimism and worry in Australian workers.

A 2025 Tech Council of Australia report found that 93% of Australian workers believe AI will augment their jobs rather than replace them, and 72% said technology has had a positive or very positive impact on their working lives over the past decade. Across all age groups, workers are positive about improving their working life over the next five to ten years (Tech Council of Australia, 2025).

PwC Australia’s 2025 AI Jobs Barometer found that job availability in Australia grew 10% in roles more exposed to AI, which appears at first to be a counterintuitive finding that reflects AI creating new demand for human skills alongside automation of routine tasks. Furthermore, workers with AI skills commanded an average 56% wage-premium globally in 2024 (PwC, 2025).

LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise 2026 report found that AI-specific roles are the fastest-growing in Australia, with AI literacy now the most in-demand skill across the economy. There has been a nearly 60% increase in Australians adding ‘founder’ to their profiles in the past year, and more than three in ten workers said AI has increased the likelihood of them starting their own business (LinkedIn, 2026).

This is not a picture that dominates the news cycle. The Australian workforce is, on the whole, adapting, and in many cases, thriving.

But collective optimism does not mean that every individual worker is navigating this transition easily. And for a specific cohort: the experienced professionals in midlife, with deep expertise in domains that AI is directly targeting; the picture is more complex.

Where it gets harder: the midlife professional experience

A national survey by the Australian Human Resources Institute found that the share of organisations reporting stress as a cause of unscheduled staff absence rose from 42% to 50% between 2023 and 2024 — an increase that workplace researchers have linked to the pace of AI-related change (AHRI, 2024). Similarly, in Europe, a survey of more than 5,000 workers found that intensive AI-driven workplace monitoring nearly doubled stress levels compared with those workplaces where there was no such AI technology (Foundation for European Progressive Studies, 2023, as cited in Vänttinen et al., 2025).

Recent perspectives indicate that for knowledge workers in finance, law, technology, and consulting, AI threatens not just their jobs but also their sense of professional identity, giving rise to what workplace researchers have termed FOBO: Fear of Being Obsolete. Only 36% of global workers feel they have the skills and knowledge to use AI appropriately, contributing to feelings of anxiety about job security and relevance (AHRI, 2024).

This is the kind of experience that is hard to capture in aggregate statistics and survey data: not the loss of a job, but a more unsettling shift — the sense that expertise accumulated over decades is being repositioned, and that the professional identity built around it — is no longer as stable as it once was.

Why is this an identity question as much as a career one?

For most people in midlife, work provides a lot more than income. It is a source of daily purpose, intellectual engagement, social belonging, and sense of competence. It is what structures the day and, often, the self.

When that structure begins to shift, through technological change that has no regard for how invested you are in your role — practical concerns spill over to existential questions. Studies indicate that when an individual’s sense of identity has been tied to a role, there is great disruption to their sense of self when that role changes (Wang et al., 2025). For midlife workers who have spent two or three decades building expertise in a specific domain, a shift in that domain’s value is also a shift in their sense of who they are.

Indeed, AI’s integration into workplaces represents not merely technological change but a fundamental reconfiguration of work itself, challenging longstanding assumptions about human expertise and the implicit contracts between workers and employers (Shekhar & Saurombe, 2026). Workers experiencing this shift often report feelings of betrayal, disorientation, and a loss of the dignity and autonomy that their expertise used to provide (Shekhar & Saurombe, 2026).

The psychological mechanisms worth understanding

Anticipatory anxiety

One of the most consistent findings in the emerging literature on AI and work is that the uncertainty that precedes change is often more psychologically taxing than the change itself. Workers who do not know whether or how their role will be affected carry a sustained low-level vigilance that consumes cognitive and emotional resources, even when their job remains intact.

Studies have found that AI tools can concurrently enhance productivity while amplifying anxiety, with the psychological impact depending on how change is communicated, how much control workers feel they have, and whether their organisation provides adequate support through the transition (McNamara & Thornton, 2025).

Identity strain

As AI demonstrates competence in areas previously considered distinctly human — legal drafting, financial modelling, clinical assessment, complex writing — workers in those fields can experience what researchers call identity strain: a gradual erosion of the sense that their expertise is unique and irreplaceable (Shekhar & Saurombe, 2026). This may be particularly acute for individuals in midlife, whose professional identity has been stable for decades.

The question underneath the anxiety

In clinical practice, the AI-related distress that surfaces in midlife most often has an existential dimension alongside practical concerns. The questions beneath this anxiety tend to go beyond “what if I lose my job?” and “what if I lose my income” towards existential worries relating to identity such as, “who am I if this changes?” and “what actually matters to me, if not this work-role I’ve built my life around?”

Midlife already invites existential questioning, and AI disruption is, for some people, accelerating that ahead of schedule.

An emerging clinical picture

In early 2026, University of Florida researchers published a clinical framework formally proposing what they call AI Replacement Dysfunction (AIRD) — a pattern of psychological distress arising from the fear or potential for professional obsolescence due to AI (McNamara & Thornton, 2025). The authors describe AI Replacement Dysfunction (AIRD) as a pattern that includes anxiety, poor sleep, loss of professional identity, and a reduced sense of purpose. These symptoms overlap significantly with adjustment disorder, generalised anxiety, and depression — which means that when people present to their GP or clinical psychologist with these difficulties, the AI-related context is often overlooked as part of the picture (McNamara & Thornton, 2025).

What does the research say helps?

Accurate framing

The most important first step is placing the experience accurately — neither minimising it nor catastrophising it. AI-related career disruption is real for some workers and not for others. For those who are experiencing it, naming what is happening — as a genuine identity challenge occurring in an unprecedented technological moment, not as personal inadequacy — is itself therapeutic.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) provides structured tools for examining thought patterns that amplify AI-related distress — the catastrophic predictions about the future, the all-or-nothing appraisals of professional worth, and the avoidance of reskilling or career exploration that learned helplessness can produce. Indeed, a positive correlation between AI workplace implementation and both anxiety and depression, supporting the relevance of evidence-based anxiety and depression treatments in this context (McNamara & Thornton, 2025).

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

ACT is particularly suited to the features of AI-related career disruption — specifically the genuine uncertainty that cannot be resolved through information-gathering or planning, and the identity questions that require exploration rather than quick answers. Values clarification, in particular, helps people distinguish between what they actually care about and what they have been performing — which is often where the most useful path forward begins.

Identity reconstruction

The most important and most underutilised piece of psychological work in this context is identity reconstruction: the deliberate process of building a sense of self that is not wholly contingent on a specific professional role. This involves identifying what aspects of the professional self are genuinely transferable — the intellectual curiosity, the judgment, the relational skills, the accumulated wisdom — and building a narrative around what remains when the specific role changes.

It cannot bring the judgment, ethical reasoning, relational intelligence, and contextual wisdom that come from doing something for a long time and genuinely caring about it.

Research has demonstrated that AI can augment human capabilities and create new opportunities for skill development. Employees using AI assistants report substantially higher productivity and greater job satisfaction when AI is implemented with appropriate support systems (Ameen et al., 2025, as cited in Kim & Lee, 2024). The capacities that AI cannot replicate — complex judgment, ethical reasoning, interpersonal nuance, contextual wisdom, and the ability to hold ambiguity — are precisely those that accumulate across a career. These are midlife strengths.

I am using AI at work and finding it genuinely useful. Should I be worried?

Not necessarily — and in fact the majority of Australian workers report exactly this experience.
